Fox Sports Radio Teams With Oakland A’s Barry Zito In Strikeouts For Troops

LOS ANGELES, August 15, 2005 – Fox Sports Radio announced today that it is the official sports radio network of Strikeouts For Troops™, a national program founded by Oakland A’s Pitcher Barry Zito for the benefit of wounded troops and their families.

Barry Zito and many other players from Major League Baseball, including Curt Schilling (Red Sox), Tim Hudson (Braves), CC Sabathia (Indians), Eric Chavez and Mark Kotsay (A’s), are pledging money for their accomplishments on the field throughout the 2005 season.  Injured military service members being treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Bethesda Naval Hospital, and other military hospitals, will receive some “comforts of home” as well as financial assistance pertaining to travel and housing expenses so families can be near their loved ones while they recover.

Zito will appear weekly on The Drive on Fox with Chris Myers and Bryan Cox between noon and 3 p.m. PST to give listeners an update on the latest Strikeouts For Troops news.  He will also talk baseball with the hosts and listeners.  Other players participating in the program will guest onadditional Fox Sports Radio programming throughout the week.

"I'm pleased that Fox Sports Radio Network has joined Strikeouts For Troops as our official sports radio network.  Together we can make a huge impact on the lives of our wounded men and women in uniform. With all the negative things you hear in the news—regardless of how you feel about the war—you have to admire the courage and spirit of the troops, and respect the sacrifice they are making,” said Barry Zito.

Fox Sports Radio VP/GM-Executive Producer, Andrew Ashwood said, “We do not take lightly our responsibility and privilege to be the official sports radio network for such a worthy grass roots cause like Barry’s Strikeouts For Troops.  This is the perfect line extension of our 24/7 on-air commitment via American Forces Network (AFN), to those incredible men and women, around the world, standing tall for America.”

The Strikeouts For Troops effort is funded by contributions to the "Strikeouts For Troops Fund" at The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.  For more information about Strikeouts For Troops or to make a contribution, please visit http://www.strikeoutsfortroops.org.
